Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is good and I hope you can join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm for all the
day’s news.

On tonight's programme, we'll have a report on a series of racist attacks on
Polish people living in Grimsby. I’ll have the full story on that one. And
we'll have an exclusive report on the concerns over a possible staffing crisis
at Grantham hospital following an email leaked to the Look North newsroom. More
on that later.

I'll be speaking to the parking watchdog about the ongoing row over the parking
attendants in Hull. This has really got you hot under the collar. I’ve had so
many emails from you about this, so thank you very much indeed for all of
those. I’ll be putting forward your concerns tonight on the programme.

We'll have the latest at the Burghley Horse Trials as the toughest equestrian
challenge gets underway and we’ll be meeting the latest rising star in the
competition. He’s Oliver Townend and he’s the brilliant young Yorkshire Rider
who we will be following during the event. It’s a wonderful success story for
our region.

Also tonight, Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell will be telling me about his thoughts
over Tony Blair's troubles in Downing Street. And Look North will be looking
back at the smuggling routes on our East Coast. So a very busy programme. I
hope you can join me tonight. And of course Paul will be with us for the
forecast.

Students

How things have changed since my days at the Hammersmith College For Further
Education! Mind you that was many years ago. We didn’t even have calculators in
those days. We had something called the slide rule. Did anybody else ever
wrestle with the slide rule? And the teacher had an enormous slide rule, which
was about eight foot long on her platform at the front of the class. I never
really understood what slide rules were all about, but then that probably
doesn’t surprise you! Anyway, I digress. A college is handing out free Ipods to
students so that they can listen to lectures at their leisure. That’s nice
isn’t it? This is at South Kent college, which is down in Dover. The £100 Ipod
Nanos were given out as students enrolled in their courses yesterday. It’s a
hard hard life isn’t it? Your views on that and indeed on anything else, all
gratefully received. Get in touch to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Apparently the Ipods
could be a subliminal tool to allow students to learn as the!
y carry on with their normal everyday activities. Well, it’s a hard life isn’t
it?

Diet

Eating a handful of nuts could help keep your heart healthy, claim doctors.
Just two portions of nuts a week cuts the risk of dying from a heart attack by
11%, according to a new major study. Experts say that findings from research
involving almost four hundred thousand people and shows that even a small
amount of nuts in the diet could help beat heart disease. Well, I’m one step
ahead of the pack there, because since the start of the year, I’ve been doing
the old Gillian McKeith diet. I am actually already in there and munching on my
daily nut intake. So that’s one thing I don’t need to worry about.

Extras

It was the comedy that Ricky Gervais did after his hit smash, The Office and
it’s called Extras. One series has already come out with many guest stars. The
most memorable episode from the first series was with guest star, Les Dennis.
He was very funny in it and of course Kate Winslet as well. Several people have
emailed in to ask if we could have Ricky on the show. Well, I don’t think we
can to be honest, because Ricky hasn’t done anything locally. But I can tell
you, because I’ve heard this on the quiet, that a new series of Extras is on
the way with more guest stars. Now they’re trying to keep the list quiet, but I
gather that one of them will be with Keith Chegwin and also Richard and Judy.
So that promises to be good. I’ve got the first series on DVD now and I’m
looking forward to the new series immensely. Not sure when it starts though.
Soon I hope!

Telephone Telephony

Can you imagine this scenario? The phone rings and on the end of the line is
the very person that you were just thinking about. It’s amazing isn’t it?
According to a new study, this is no coincidence. Doctor Rupert Sheldrake
believes that it’s a case of telephone telephony. His research suggests that
those on the receiving end could correctly guess who’s ringing 45% of the time.
So when you imagine who’s calling you, then 45% of the time you will get it
right. This is far more frequent than if it’s just down to chance alone. His
controversial research was presented to the British Association Festival of
Science, where obviously lots of scientists have nothing better to do than
guess who’s on the other end of the phone! They questioned the reliability of
his study, which involved only four people! And said that there was no evidence
that telephony was anything more than a charlatan’s fantasy. How could you do
research with just four people? Well, telephone telephony? Do you b!
 elieve in it or not?

Jeremy Clarkson

Jeremy has enraged Lincolnshire several times just recently, but now he has
zoomed ahead of his rivals to be named as television’s Personality of the Year
at the GQ awards this week. The Sun columnist and Top Gear host was presented
with his gong by Rod Stewart’s fiancé Penny Lancaster. So Jeremy is TV’s
Personality of the Year as voted by GQ readers. Well, that’s a lad’s mag, so
they’re bound to like him! The former Doctor Who star, Billie Piper, was Woman
of the Year and Big Brother host, Russell Brand, was the most stylish man. I
hate to say it, but I’ve never heard of him!

What’s On

If you’re involved in any event and you’d like a plug, then get in touch.
Christina writes – “In your Levy Letter you are asking for any events. Well,
please read the following. We need a plug. We especially need to get the
tickets for the quiz night sold. So if you can give it a mention, then I would
be very grateful.” This is Advice Week Quiz Night and it’s on Tuesday 12th
September from 7.30pm til late. There are bar prizes. This is at Hull YPI on
Chanterlands avenue, which is next to the crematorium. Tickets are £1 each with
teams of five for £5 or teams of ten for £10. If you want to give Christina a
call, then ring her on 01482 336161. That’s the Advice Week run by the
Citizen’s Advice bureau and their quiz night on Tuesday 12th September.

There’s another note here from Maureen. She says, “I’m Brown Owl of the second
Welton Brownies. On Thursday 21st of September, we are celebrating our 30th
anniversary. We have placed an advertisement in every Welton and Dunholme news
since January this year. I’ve only had two phone calls to date. Well, where are
the Brownies then, which have been associated with the unit since its start?
Anyone, who’s been a Brownie, young leader or unit helper or guider, please ask
them to get in touch. We’ve had these adverts in, but not one Brownie has got
in touch in the village.” If you want to get in touch with Maureen, who’s a
Brown Owl at Welton near Lincoln, then give her a call. Her telephone number is
01522 812470.

Well, that's it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Take care, bye for now.

Peter
