Hello, it's Peter here. Welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day's
going well and you'll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past six.
It’s another beautiful day with lots of sunshine and it’s nice and mild. We’ll
have the forecast tonight from Paul as usual, and we’ll have all the day’s news
and stories as always.

On the programme tonight we have the latest on the couples who have had their
wedding plans ruined by a local hotel. We'll speak with local solicitors to
find out what rights they have. It’s a sad story and every young couple’s
nightmare, and we’ll be following this on the programme.

We have a special report on plans to expand a refuge centre for victims of
domestic violence in Lincolnshire.

We'll join a team helping people give up smoking as they test the levels of
Carbon Monoxide in members of the public. It’s National No Smoking Day and if
you’re a smoker you might want to watch this… or maybe you won’t!

We’ll go behind the scenes of England's oldest horse race with a special
preview of the Kiplingcotes Derby.

And we'll meet the pensioners turning back time as they show off their classic
Triumph motorbikes.

House Prices

House prices of course have kept the Levy Letter going over the last few
months. There’s always stories. And the latest one is quite an interesting one
if you’re trying to buy or sell your house at the moment. The average house
price in this country has broken through the £200,000 price bracket as prices
have soared by 11%. Now desperate house buyers are fuelling a new boom in
prices as they rush to get up the property ladder. There are 8 buyers chasing
every house for sale, with huge demand from families looking for bigger and
better homes. That’s extraordinary isn’t it?

DVT

Workers who spend long hours at their desks are more at risk of Deep Vein
Thrombosis according to new research. The findings contradict the belief that
long haul flyers are most likely to suffer the potentially fatal blood clot.
The survey found that only 1.4 percent of DVT victims had recently been on a
plane, compared with 34% who’d been sitting at their desks for too long.
Sitting at desks all day, you’re more at risk than flying long haul in a plane.

Books

The road to the bookshop is paved with good intentions, but when it comes to
reading, what we buy when we get there, is another story altogether. According
to a survey, we spend on average £4000 in a lifetime on books, but fail to
finish almost half of them. Most of us at home have nearly half our books
unread. Many say they no longer have time to read or are too tired to read and
many say they prefer to play computer games or watch television instead. More
than half admit to buying books that they have no intention of reading, simply
to put on the shelf or the coffee table to make themselves look more
intelligent. Can you believe that? We spend £4000 on books in a lifetime and
more than half of the books we have at home, we have never even read and we
will probably never read!

Sun Tan

Well sun worshipers could be addicted to sun tanning in the same way that
people become addicted or dependent on nicotine or alcohol. It was being
claimed that despite warnings about how harmful tanning can be, people still
yearned for the bronzed look even though it increases their risk of cancer.
People it seems, become addicted to the sunshine and having a tan, and they put
aside any worries of skin cancer. I don’t think anyone’s very surprised there.

Twenty Pound Note

The new twenty pound note is out and everybody’s talking about this chap called
Adam, or Adam Smith his name is. He replaces Edward Elgar on the note. Three
quarters of the people in this country have no idea who he is, including me.
Who is he? Well he’s Adam Smith, an 18th Century philosopher and political
economist who played a key role in the intellectual movement known as the
Scottish enlightenment, so now we know. You would have thought there was
somebody better known that that. But anyway, Adam is on the twenty pound note
and now you know who he is, and you read it in the Levy Letter.

Sleeping Together

We were talking yesterday about the number of people about the number of people
who are now sleeping in separate bedrooms. Architects in America are now
designing houses with two master bedrooms and it’s starting to happen here as
more and more couples who are living together or married are sleeping
separately so they get a good night’s sleep. I asked if anybody wanted to
comment on this and I have here a note from Dave and Tracy, they come from
Bourne.
They say “Both myself and my good lady sleep in separate beds for four days of
the week. Why? Well we both work 12 hour night shifts and find sleeping during
the day difficult enough, but together it becomes almost impossible as we
constantly disturb each other. During the warmer months the heat from two
people causes the room’s temperature to become pretty uncomfortable. Some
people think we’re a little strange but I can say that our arrangement suits us
perfectly. It also has the added bonus of making you appreciate your days off
more.”

So there we are, that’s Dave and Tracy who are in Bourne in South Lincolnshire.
They work nights and they sleep in separate bedrooms four days a week. But they
look forward to their day off.

Photos

Keep the photos coming in, we had a nice one on the programme last night of the
Lord Mayor’s car parked on double yellow lines. No sooner had we shown it then
we had a call from the Lord Mayor’s chauffeur to say that if he does park on a
double yellow line, then he has to pay the ticket.
But anyway, the more unusual pictures the better. We get quite a few sunrises
and sunsets, but if you have something a little different then send it into the
usual address. If you have a problem or you find a story that you think we
should know about then email me direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Enjoy your afternoon, and join me tonight on BBC One at half past six.

Bye for now

Peter.
