Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you'll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half
past six. I'll have all the day's news and we’ll have the forecast and tonight
it comes from Lisa Gallagher.

On tonight's programme, we'll be at Lincoln Cathedral where vandals have caused
£5000 pounds worth of damage by smashing windows in just the last week. We’ll
be finding out what measures can be put in place to protect this incredible
building.

And they've been a feature of Hull since the 1930s, but is it the end now for
the white telephone boxes on Hull’s street corners? We’ll be talking to
Kingston Communications about their new plans.

We'll be hearing from the Tory MP, who has launched an attack on party leader
David Cameron, accusing him of forgetting his grassroots party members. And the
Apprentice winner, Michelle Dewberry, will be taking us on a tour of the city
and talking about her childhood in Hull.

Believe it or not, but summer is here and the first English grown strawberries
are hitting the shops in the next couple of days. Hannah Moffat will be at one
farm in East Yorkshire tasting a sample! And from all accounts this morning,
there may not be many strawberries left when Hannah has finished tasting!
That’s all tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm. I hope you can join me then.

Children

If you’ve got children, then you’ll know that you can’t have a party without
sending the guests home with a goodie bag. And if little ones go to a party,
then they too expect to take home a party bag including a slice of birthday
cake of course! Children are demanding much much more in their party bags these
days. If you’ve got children, then it’s certainly an expensive business. Mums
and Dads try to outdo each other. The average party bag now costs £7.48!
They’re packed with gifts like model cars, plastic sun glasses and fake tiaras.
With an average of eleven guests per birthday party for the younger ones that
means it costs £82.28 for a party bash and that’s just for the goodie bags. If
you have a view on that one, then get in touch. Are you a parent, who hosts
parties for your children and do you spend that much on the goodie bags?

Photos

Don’t forget if you’ve got a photograph that you’re particularly proud of that
you think we should see, then send it to me. It’s the usual address of [EMAIL
PROTECTED] And if you want to send me a hard copy in the post then it’s BBC
Look North, Queen's Court, Queen's Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH. And if you’ve got a
problem that you think we could deal with on Leave it to Levy, then send me the
details and let me know how I can help. Many of the stories we’ve done just
recently on the programme, especially over the last week with the news of the
hotel in Hull going into receivership leaving many brides to be without a
reception venue, were sent in by viewers to the programme. They emailed me in
and told me of their problems and we were able to put it on the television. So
let me know what it is – [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Exercise

It’s long been known that regular exercise is good for the body. Now scientists
have proved that a workout is just as important for the mind. Researchers for
the States discovered that exercise boosts brain power, building new brain
cells in the region linked to memory and dementia. A separate study in Britain
proves that exercise can also help people quit smoking. Exercise can boost your
brain as well as your body and it’s also very good for helping improve the
memory. There you are. Practise what you preach is what they say! I do zero
exercise and I think it’s probably a little bit late to start now!

Cruising

It’s the one thing that I’ve never done, but I’ve always fancied it. But I’ve
always associated it with older people and that’s going on a cruise. The number
of people taking an ocean holiday has doubled in the past ten years. Rather
than simply a chance for pensioners to sit around on deck and dine with the
Captain and clap along with over the hill cabaret performers, it’s not like
that anymore. It seems that many of the younger people are going cruising as
well. As a result 1.2 million of us have holidayed aboard a liner last year,
compared with just five hundred and twenty-two thousand in 1997. That’s 12% up
on 2005. It’s the biggest increase in passenger numbers in cruising of any
European country. We’ve seen pictures of many of these huge cruise ships and
they look superb. The number of people cruising is on the up and the cost of
cruising is actually coming down.

Emails

Thanks for the emails on a variety of subjects. One story has had a lot of
comments this week. It wasn’t a story that was in the Levy Letter and it’s not
even a local story. I’ll mention it nevertheless, because a lot of people had a
view on this. A salesman has become the first driver to have points put on his
licence for eating a sandwich at the wheel. He is Keith Pemberton and was fined
£60 after police stopped him for driving without due care. He was pulled over
and given a fixed penalty under the same law that forbids motorists from using
mobile phones. He got fined because he was eating a sandwich whilst driving.
Several emails have come in about this. There’s one here from Sarah, who says,
“Peter, I regularly eat a chocolate bar on the way to work and a cereal bar.
That is my breakfast in the car. Does this mean it is illegal?” I’m not really
sure what the law says on this, but it has certainly prompted a big response.

Also, earlier in the week, we showed the picture of the Lord Mayor of Hull’s
car parked on a double yellow line. Any unusual photographs like that one that
you think we would like to show, then do send them in to me! I look forward to
hearing from you! Send them in to the usual address.

Well, that's it from me for today. Enjoy your Thursday afternoon and join me
tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Bye for now,

Peter
