Hello, it’s peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope you’re
having a good day and if you have something planned for the weekend then I hope
it goes well. It's a very important weekend for Hull with the commemoration
events of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.

On tonight's programme, we'll be live at William Wilberforce's house, which has
had a huge refurbishment and will be available as a museum looking at the
history of the man, who campaigned to stop the slave trade. I’ll be down there
at the museum for the programme and I’ll be taking a look behind the scenes as
they prepare for its reopening. And we'll have a special report with an
incredible glimpse back into history. We’ve been given exclusive access to the
diaries of a slave owner, who lived and worked on a sugar plantation. Plus one
of the region's top choirs will have a special rendition of England's favourite
hymn, Amazing Grace. That’s all tonight on BBC One for our special programme
commemorating the abolition of the slave trade.

Also tonight, we’ll have the rest of the day’s news of course, including why
Lincolnshire Police are demanding that motorists give up their mobile phones
and why there's been a dramatic increase in horse riding incidents in the
region. And The Deep in Hull are popping opening the bubbly. Find out why the
Deep has five special reasons to celebrate today. And Lisa will be with us for
the forecast. I hope that you can join me tonight.

Amazing Grace

As I’ve just said, it’s a big weekend for the Wilberforce Commemorations. It’s
also the release of the blockbuster film telling the story of William
Wilberforce. It’s called Amazing grace and it stars, so I’m told, the Hollywood
heart throb, Ioan Gruffudd. I’m looking forward to seeing the film and of
course it’ll mean that much more to me after going to the birthplace of
Wilberforce today and seeing the film actually in Hull. So look out for that
film in cinemas.

And last night I mentioned a special documentary produced by our Chief News
Correspondent, Paul Murphy. It’s the story of a slave, who bought his own
freedom and it traces the story of the researchers from Hull, who went to the
grave of Venture Smith to try and find out more about his origins. Smith was
one of millions of Africans taken to America by the international slave trade.
It's being shown as part of the bicentenary commemorations of the abolition of
slavery. And that’s on BBC One at 10.15pm on Sunday night. So look out for
that.

However, we’ve got a special preview screening of the documentary on Sunday
morning. If you'd like to attend, then it’s here at the BBC in Hull. Please
email me at the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Places are limited and it's
first come first served, but we do have some places left, so get in touch today
if you’d like to come and see that special preview of A Slave’s Story on Sunday
morning.

Don’t Sleep And Drive

Motorists are often warned to recognise the danger signs when you start feeling
sleepy whilst driving. Motorways are often where we start to feel drained and
sleepiness is often the cause of terrible accidents on our roads. Now there is
a new device going on sale, which is a car seat and it detects if we are about
to fall asleep and if we are, then it wakes us up. It’s estimated that three
hundred people a year are killed by falling asleep at the wheel. This device is
called the Smart Seat, but I don’t actually know how much it costs. But it’s
the new invention to help us stay alert whilst driving. I also want to know how
it wakes you up – an electric shock maybe?

Apprentice

The new series of the hit show, The Apprentice, as I said yesterday, is about
to begin and this time there are no contestants from Hull! However, there are
two people from other parts of Yorkshire. So we’re going to keep an eye out for
them. The hugely talented Michelle Dewberry is no longer working for Sir Alan
and now I hear that the first winner of The Apprentice, Tim Campbell, has also
left the employ of Sir Alan. I gather he wasn't fired, but left the £100,000
job of his own accord. Well, I’m sure with a CV like his, he won’t have much
trouble getting another job.

Coffee

With coffee shops in some cities virtually on every street corner it’s no
surprise to hear that the café culture has invaded the domestic kitchen. Annual
sales of expensive coffee machines have more than doubled since 2001. As you
know, I love my coffee, but I’ve never owned one of these fancy coffee makers
and probably wouldn't know what to do if I had one. Some people must have
plenty of money though as there’s a model here for an Espresso maker which
costs just £699! You could get two at that price!

Letter

Don’t forget, if there's someone you know, who's not signed up to the Levy
Letter and you think they would like one, then point them in the direction of
either one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page. I’ll be able to
give you a daily insight into what’s going on behind the scenes of Look North
and what will be on the programme tonight. So tell them to click on Levy Letter
and get them to follow the instructions through. They'll then get their daily
email from me the following day.

One To Watch

Well, I told you about A Slave’s Story being screened on BBC One on Sunday.
Well, here’s another pointer for you to watch on TV this weekend. There’s the
Politics Show on Sunday at noon. The show will be coming live from Wilberforce
House where the great and the good will be gathering to see Owen Arthur. He’s
the special guest in Hull this weekend and he’s the Prime Minister of Barbados.
He’ll be declaring the newly refurbished Wilberforce House well and truly open!
Our political editor, Tim Iredale, will be talking to Mr Arthur and to local
people as well about how important the occasion is for Hull. He’ll also be
talking to the biographer of William Wilberforce and asking just how he managed
to succeed with his Bill to abolish the slave trade when so many other
politicians and campaigners failed. The show will also feature a profile of
Alan Johnson, MP for Hull West and a candidate for the Labour Party deputy
leadership. That’s all on the Politics Show at noon on Sunday. S!
 o watch out for that!

First Responders

I get a lot of emails every day from people asking for help! And if I can help
I will. I noticed an email from Liam Limb. He says, “Hi, I am part of our local
first responders in Hornsea and we currently have six people covering 24/7
working for the Ambulance Service. We mainly attend to heart attacks, chest
pains, breathing difficulties etc. We urgently require volunteers! Having tried
local advertising, we have not as yet managed to recruit anyone. Hope you can
help.” So do you fancy that? Do you live in or around Hornsea? Well, I’m sure
Liam would love to hear from you. Get in touch with me, if you fancy training
to be a first responder in Hornsea and I’ll put you in touch with Liam. The
address as always is [EMAIL PROTECTED] And that’s also the address if you’ve
got a problem that you’d like me to help with!

Well, that's it from me for today. I hope you can join me tonight when I’ll be
live at the Wilberforce House in Hull for the 200th anniversary of the
abolition of the slave trade.

Have a very good afternoon.

Take care,
Peter
