Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Monday's Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you'll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past
six. I'll have all the day's news and Paul is back from his holidays and will
have the forecast for us.

On tonight's programme, we'll have the shocking images of the theft in a Hull
veterinary surgery where two charity boxes were snatched right in front of
staff. And we'll take a look at the secret filming inside North Sea Camp prison
near Boston that's reignited the debate over open prisons.

Plus, three months before the smoking ban, we'll have a special report on the
impact on working men's clubs, which many people fear will spell their demise.
And I want to know what you think about the smoking ban. It came into force in
Ireland and Scotland last year and in Wales today. So get in touch, what do you
think to the smoking ban in public places? Do you think it’ll change the
atmosphere in pubs and clubs or are you looking forward to being in smoke-free
public places? Get in touch with me today on this one. It’s the usual address
of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also tonight, are you looking to get your foot on the property ladder? Find out
tonight how the ruins of an ancient Flamborough castle could be yours. It’s not
everyone’s idea of a des res! That’s all tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm. I hope
you can join me then.

Whatever you did at the weekend, then I hope it went well. The weather was
certainly good. It was beautiful yesterday. If you had something organised or
planned, then I hope you enjoyed it! Here’s to the next weekend. I can’t
believe I’m looking forward to that already! And it’s only Monday! However, if
you’re involved in anything for charity, and the event is happening this
weekend, and you’d like a little plug, then get in touch.

A while ago I mentioned a huge event this summer in Scunthorpe. Believe it or
not, but five hundred women in pyjamas and nighties or any night attire that
takes their fancy will be walking through the streets of Scunthorpe in the
middle of the night on Friday 29th June. It’s all in aid of Lindsey Lodge
Hospice in the town, who do some incredibly difficult work looking after very
poorly people. Well, Debb Pollard, the organiser, got in touch with us and
asked us to put a little plug in the Levy Letter and she’s astounded now with
the amount of interest. They’ve got the full amount of people registered to do
this Sleep Walk – five hundred women will be walking, starting at midnight at
Glanford Park. All money raised will go to the Hospice, which provides
specialised nursing and medical care twenty four hours a day, seven days a week
all free of charge to people, who are most at need. Debb has told me that some
funding is received from the North Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust,!
but most of the income is gratefully received from the generosity of local
people and organisations. So congratulations to Debb and all the organisers for
this. And if anyone approaches you with a sponsorship form, then I hope you can
support them! Best of luck to everyone walking the Sleep Walk in Scunthorpe in
June.

April Fool

There were some good ones in the papers today, although some of the news these
days is so crazy! There were a couple of stories that I was reading and I
wasn’t even sure if they were April Fools or not. It was quite difficult to
tell. The paper that I had had the story about charging for having charcoal on
the barbeque, because of our carbon emissions! Are you worried about your
carbon footprint when barbequing? The law starts today. Did you read it?
Unbelievable! Hope you don’t get caught though this summer!

Joseph

The programme started on Saturday night – ‘Any Dream Will Do’, looking for a
new Joseph for the West End show. They’ve whittled it down to those, who are
going to go into the Joseph school. It’s a terrific musical. I think it’s one
of my all-time favourites. I probably saw it for the first time about
twenty-five years ago. One of the judges this week was Bill Kenwright. He’s a
great theatre producer and has been working for many years. He’s also the big
boss at Everton Football Club as well. Also on the panel is Denise Van Outen.
She’s often dismissed as fairly lightweight, but she’s played the lead in
‘Chicago’ and also in ‘Tell Me On A Sunday’. So it looks like it’ll be a good
series. Look out for it next week!

Rotterdam

I was reading over the weekend about the port of Rotterdam. Of course,
Rotterdam is so easy to get to from this region, if you want to travel there on
the ferry from Hull. The ferry goes every single night of the week and twelve
hours later, you’re in Europe. I think we forget just how important Rotterdam
is. I was reading that it is the biggest port in Europe and it is the second
largest port in the world, after Shanghai. We forget that it’s just across the
water and is so easily accessible from Hull. So there you are. A little plug
for Rotterdam, although I’m sure they don’t need it! I also mention it, because
I was wandering up and down the waterfront yesterday afternoon, getting some
sunshine and two or three people were talking and they were all from Rotterdam.
I suppose, how we pop over to Amsterdam or Rotterdam for the weekend, then they
come over here. They were wandering around looking at The Deep and watching the
boats in the Marina. So we’re definitely a tourist d!
 estination!

Ian Rankin

He is one of the country’s top crime writers and he’s just won yet another
award for one of his books. He’s now Crimewriter Of The Year at the Book Awards
last week. He’s one of the people we’ve had on the programme a couple of times
since we started the Hull edition of Look North. He’s from Edinburgh, but he’s
a really nice guy. Let’s hope it’s not too long until he’s back. Last time he
was here, he was doing a book signing in one of the big bookshops in the area,
but Ian Rankin is such a nice guy and deserves all the success that he’s having.

Problems

Don’t forget if you’ve got a problem that you think we could deal with on Leave
it to Levy, then send me the details and let me know how I can help. And if
you’ve got a photograph that you think we could show on the programme, then
send it to me. It’s the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Get in touch!

Extras

If you enjoyed the first series of Extras and then enjoyed the second series
even more, then you’re just like me. It had some big stars in it as their guest
stars – Ronnie Corbett, Jonathan Ross, Ben Stiller and Sir Ian McKellen. From
today, Extras The DVD is out in the shops. Maybe you saw Ricky Gervais talking
to Jonathan Ross on Friday night. An incredibly funny and talented man!

Well, that's it from me for today. I hope you can join me tonight on BBC One at
6.30pm.

Bye for now!

Peter
