Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you'll be able to join me for Wednesday’s Look North on
BBC One at half past six as usual.

On tonight's programme, we'll have exclusive footage as Humberside Police carry
out immigration raids in the city. And we’ll find out why residents in one Hull
estate can't sleep safely at night. Plus we'll meet the villagers in
Lincolnshire, who are up in arms after their polling booth was taken away. More
on these later.

They’re an iconic symbol for our region and can often be seen practising high
up above the Lincolnshire fields. We’ll have more on the latest campaign to
safeguard the future of the Red Arrows in our region.

And also tonight, we'll be going behind the scenes in England's tallest working
windmill near Boston. That’s all tonight on BBC One at half past six. I hope
you can join me then. And Lisa will be with us for the forecast.

Weather

Talking of the weather, what a marvellous weekend it was for Easter. They
reckon it’ll be even warmer this weekend. Lisa, of course, will have the
details for us tonight. It was interesting to see the pictures in the paper and
on the television of people sitting on the beach, sweltering in the heat down
in Cornwall. Not that I’m promoting Cornwall, I hope you understand! There were
also pictures of Marbella in Spain, where it was grey and windswept and at
times very rainy indeed. How things have changed? I bet people were kicking
themselves if they booked a holiday in Spain last weekend. And they reckon that
it made us spend £7.8 billion pounds this Easter weekend on DIY goods, garden
products and barbeques for the summer. That’s an incredible spend isn’t it? It
was a great weekend and let’s hope we’ll have some more good weather coming up,
especially for those of you, who bought a barbeque! And we’re only three or
four weeks away from another Bank Holiday at the start of Ma!
 y.

Still Single

One in three women are unmarried at the age of thirty-five, according to new
official figures. That’s a third still unmarried at the age of thirty-five. In
2000, only a quarter were not married and in 1990, just one in ten was in this
position. Marriage began to experience a decline in the 1980s, but in the last
decade, its popularity has fallen very steeply. The downward trend corresponds
with the increase in women following careers, the rising cost of buying a home
and the growing acceptance of couples simply living together. There you are.

Wilf

Who is Wilf? No idea? Computer users waste up to two days a month surfing in
cyber space for things that they don’t even need, according to a new survey.
The phenomenon has been named as ‘wilfing’, short for ‘What Was I Looking For?’
And it affects more than two thirds of the thirty-four million people in the
UK, with access to the Internet. A major proportion of them admit to indulging
in the aimless habit, whether at home or at work. That is ‘wilfing’! Does it
affect you? Are you a ‘wilfer’? Let me know! But a couple of days a month are
wasted surfing the Internet for nothing at all.

Photos

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a photo that you think we would like to see on the
Big Screen, then send it to me at the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or if
you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think I might be able to tackle for
Leave It To Levy, then send me the details to the usual address.

Diets

Can you believe this? The world’s largest study of weight loss has shown that
diets do not work for the vast majority of slimmers. This is a large study. Did
we really need to know this? More worryingly it says that they may even put
lives at risk. More than two thirds pile the pounds straight back on, raising
the danger of heart attacks, stroke and diabetes, as soon as the diet is over.
In fact, most dieters end up heavier than they did to start with, according to
the researchers. This time they warn that the yoyo behaviour is linked to a
host of health problems and they say that the strain that repeated weight loss
and gain places on the body means that most people would have been better off
not dieting at all. So there you are. It is official. The world’s largest study
of weight loss shows that diets do not work!

Pocklington

There’s a huge event coming up in Pocklington this summer. I just thought I
should give it a little plug now so you can put the date in your diaries! It’s
a three day charity event called the Flying Man Festival running from the
11th-13th May. This will be the 3rd time Pocklington has celebrated the Flying
Man Festival and there will be many events taking place in memory of the Flying
Showman, Thomas Pelling, who met an untimely end whilst entertaining townsfolk
in 1733. So a rather unusual history for the Festival, but lots of events are
planned in the town, including hot air balloons, street entertainments and art
exhibitions. Lots going on, so put that date in your diary for the 11th-13th
May! And good luck to all the organisers for that event, I’m sure they’ve got
their work cut out. I hope it goes well. And of course, get in touch with me if
you want a little plug in the Levy Letter for any charity event coming up, big
or small!

Cornwall

Have I mentioned Cornwall once? Surely not. Well, just to mention it briefly
again. Crab is crawling its way back into fashion with a new generation of
shoppers attracted by its healthy low fat meat. A lot of it is down to none
other than Rick Stein. He has a seafood restaurant at Padstowe in Cornwall and
is always talking about crab. Sales of crab are now worth £6 million pounds a
year, which is up 55% over the past year alone. Crab is very good for us
apparently and is low in fat as well. Lots of its popularity is down to Rick
Stein though with his television series and his restaurants down in Cornwall.

Well, that's it from me for today. Enjoy your Wednesday afternoon. Join me
tonight on BBC One at half past six as usual.

See you later, bye for now,

Peter
