Hello, it's Peter here. Welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day's
going well and you'll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past six.
We'll have all the day's news and stories from our region as usual.

Just days after the chaos caused by a burst water main in Scunthorpe, residents
are being hit with a rise in their water bills of twice the rate of inflation.
We’ll be speaking to some of them tonight.

As arguments over global warming hot up with a special programme tonight
presented by our own Paul Hudson, we'll take a look at the issue and speak with
one MEP who thinks it's all a load of rubbish.

Find out about Justin Morgan's plans for Hull KR's challenge cup tie this
weekend. They’re having a good season so far this year, and lets hope they can
continue.

We'll have the third in our series of features about the future of wind farms
in our region.
In tonight's instalment, out intrepid reporter Guy Lynn climbs one of the
tallest wind turbines in our region.

And believe it or not, our region will host the premiere of a new musical about
the end of the slave trade.

We’ll also go behind the scenes of an East Coast centre dedicated to saving
lives in the off-shore oil and gas industry.

And we’ll have the weather forecast from Lisa tonight. That’s all at six thirty
on BBC One.

Weekend

The weekend is nearly here. If you’ve got something planned then I hope it goes
very well indeed. Of course if you’re involved in something that’s for a good
cause, a summer fair for spring fair or something you’d like to have mentioned
in the Levy Letter, then drop me a line and give me the details. And also if
you send in a story for us to pursue on the programme then remember to always
put a telephone number down so we can contact you quickly as well as an email
address. In the first instance, if you want to get in touch then the email
address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Pictures

As the weather gets better and the days get longer, if you take any pictures
you’re proud of and you think you’d like to show it on the programme then send
it to me, either a hard copy in the post, or electronically via email.

House Prices

I don’t know where the Levy Letter would be without house prices over the last
couple of years, but more good news for home owners today as two new reports
show that prices are rising. The value of the average British home has risen by
an average of £41 a day for the past year. So says the largest building society
in the UK. It’s amazing to think that homes have risen in value by £41 a day. A
typical 3 bedroom semi is now £177,000. £15,000 higher than a year ago. But
that is just the average, in our part of the world houses are a lot cheaper.

Elton

I haven’t actually seen it, I’ve taped it, but last night was the 60th birthday
performance by Elton John in Madison Square Garden in New York. He did all his
popular songs, Candle in the Wind, Rocketman, I’m Still Standing. There was a
look behind the scenes as well his lavish party, he seems to have any old
excuse for a party. Well Elton John seems to have been with us ever since I
came into radio in 1975, at the time I was playing Island Girl, do you remember
that one? It’s his 60th birthday, Happy Birthday Elton. I’ve never actually got
to meet him, but it was a great honour to be able to do some of the pre show
entertainment at the KC Stadium four years ago when he played there. It’s one
of the scariest things I’ve ever done, walking out on stage in front of 25,000
people. Anyway, happy birthday to Elton John.

Drivers

We talked about speed cameras this week on the programme. We talked about
closed circuit television cameras as well. More than a million British drivers
are now on the verge of losing their licenses due to an increase in speed
cameras. 16% of the nation’s 33 million drivers now have penalty points for
speeding offences. A fifth of these are a conviction away from disqualification
according to a new study. It means that 1.1 million drivers are just one fine
away from a ban, so quite a frightening thought. Latest figures are just out.
The number of motorists at the danger point has risen by 4% in the last 12
months. That’s according to a leading insurer. So over a million drivers are
just one fine away from a ban.

Well that’s just about it from me. If you’re talking to anybody over the
weekend who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter and they’d like one, then get
them to go to one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page, and sign up.
They’ll get their first daily Levy Letter from me on Monday.
Take care, have a great weekend, and join me tonight on BBC One at half past
six. Bye for now.

Peter
