Hello and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter, the last day before the weekend. I
hope if you’ve got something planned that it goes well for you, hopefully the
weather will hold up, it hasn’t been too bad in our region lately and
Lincolnshire especially has been getting some sun. Of course we’ll have the
weather forecast for the weekend tonight on the programme.
Also coming up tonight on Look North, as Lincolnshire health chiefs hunt down
women treated by a doctor with a potentially lethal blood disease, we'll speak
to one woman he operated on earlier this year. Remember, if you’ve been
affected by this you can get in touch and tell us your story, and don’t miss
our report today.

We'll look at why more Lincolnshire Police will soon be carrying weapons.

In sport there’s news of two big possible signings by Hull City, and we’ll be
looking ahead to the all important Hull rugby derby this weekend.

And also on Look North today, ahead of the maritime festival, I'll meet the men
in beards bringing sea shanties to Hull Marina! That’s on the programme tonight
at the usual time of six thirty on BBC One.

Driving

We’ve had a couple of driving and road related news items on the programme this
week. We were talking about motorcyclists of course, and yesterday we
interviewed a gentleman who wanted to bring in compulsory health checks for
older drivers. We’ve had a massive response on both of those, thanks for all
the emails. There was a big debate on whether older drivers should have to
undergo checkups, everybody has something to say on that, and we had an email
from Daphne in King’s Lynn prompted by all this talk of driving, she says,

“I think all of us could do our bit to make the roads safe. The nights are
pulling in and when coming home the other night I noticed quite a few cars with
only one head light on and others with just side lights on, I think during
summer we forget about checking that our lights work and then before we know it
the evening are getting darker, so time for us all to remember to check our
lights are working, it might just save a life.”

A very good suggestion there from Daphne, thank you for that.

Cheap Gadgets

I see today that one of the big supermarkets is offering a digital television
Freeview box for just £10. I was reading an article about it in the news today,
and how the price of electronic gadgets and gizmos is falling through the floor
and the possible consequences. It’s amazing how the prices of some things seem
to keep falling and when they get to the point when you think they can’t go any
lower, they do. I remember not long ago a digital television box was quite an
expensive item and now you can pick one up at the supermarket for ten pounds.
The article I was reading explained that the supermarkets can offer such cheap
goods, only just above the price of manufacturing, by buying in bulk.
Of course one of the issues raised by such cheap consumer electronics is will
they last very long, and when we eventually discard them, what’s going to
happen to all the wasted obsolete technology? There’s an environmental issue
there, but I have to say that despite all these cheaper prices, when something
new comes out and everybody wants it, they always seem to find a way of making
it quite expensive, at least in the beginning.
Of course if you haven’t switched over to digital television, you’ll have to do
so before 2012 when the analogue television signals will be turned off
permanently, so if you’ve got a spare tenner, maybe now’s the time!

Well that’s about it from me for today, as always if you want to get in touch
with me to let me know about a news story or some information, or maybe you
want to send us a picture to show before the weather you can reach me on [EMAIL
PROTECTED] Drop me a line and that will go to me directly. Thanks for reading,
I’ll be back next week with Monday’s Levy Letter, until then join me tonight at
half past six on BBC One for Look North and have a good weekend.

Bye for now

Peter
