Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your
day’s going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight on Look North at half
past six.
As a fresh row brews over how national the 2012 Olympics will be, we speak to
local athletes about what they want to help them succeed. We’re all looking
forward to the Olympics, but what’s in it for our region? We’ll be finding out.

We'll speak to the Hull flood victims marching to the Guild Hall today to
demand action.

We’re also talking to a Greek family badly affected by the fires raging through
Greece, find out tonight how you can help villages caught in up in the
disaster. We’ve all seen the dramatic pictures on television, and as well as
the devastation to the land and property, there’s a huge human cost.

And we have a special report as RAF Waddington is given an active role in
Afghanistan.

We'll also be live as the replica of The Bounty sails up the Humber estuary to
take part in the local maritime festival. That’s all coming up today at half
past six on BBC One, and we’ll have the weather forecast tonight from Paul,
hopefully we’ll be able to see him tonight! If you saw the programme last night
you’ll know what I mean. We had a little technical hitch that meant Paul did an
impression of the invisible man during the forecast, although as one email
pointed out, it did mean we got a better view of the weather graphics. Some
might even call it an improvement… But I’m sure Paul will be visible and
delivering the latest forecast tonight on the programme.

We had a massive response yesterday on our story about parking fines in Hull. A
lot of you will of course be affected by this, or know somebody who has been,
and we had a deluge of emails, messages, and texts. Thank you for all of those,
most of them were against the council’s enforcing of fines and their treatment
of those punished, but there were also a few saying that motorists should abide
by the letter of the law and stop complaining. Thank you for those messages if
you sent one in.

Rain

Now I’m sure we all wish we could guarantee a clear sunny day for an outing, an
important event, or a trip to a theme park maybe. Now Alton Towers have
apparently decided that weather controlling technology could be the answer to
making sure rain stays away on busy bank holidays. It’s hard to believe isn’t
it? It sounds like science fiction but it’s not April 1st so I suppose it must
be true.
They plan to use cloud-seeding to control rain levels in the area. The
technique has previously been used by the Soviets to have good weather for
political rallies and China plans to use it for the Beijing Olympics. I’m not
exactly sure how it works, but it seems that special particles are dropped or
fired into clouds to control rain levels. It sounds like the kind of technology
a James Bond super villain might employ, but instead it’s being used by a theme
park. We’ll have to see how this one pans out, it would have incredible
implications if everybody started doing it, wouldn’t it? Maybe we could get
some of those machines around here for next summer.

Bank Error

I saw this in the news today, it’s something that a lot of us would be tempted
to do I think. A woman is awaiting sentencing after being caught spending
£135,000 deposited into her account by accident. She discovered the money in
her account when she previously had a balance of just £6.59, and immediately
set about spending it, and giving money away to friends and family.
The interesting part of the article is where it explains the legality of
keeping money that’s not really yours. Well the letter if the law is, “a person
is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another
with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.” What does that
mean? Well if you find your self receiving a bank error in your favour, you’re
not allowed to keep it. Disappointing, isn’t it?
A legal expert in the article goes on to say that you could have a defence if
it was a smaller amount of money that you might not notice, but if it was a
large sum that you couldn’t ignore, you don’t have much justification for
spending it! What do you think, is it dishonest to keep money that isn’t really
yours? If you’ve got anything to say on this or anything else, you can contact
me on [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also if you’ve got a story to tell us about, or a
picture for the programme you can send it to me at the same email address.

I mention it a lot in the letter of course, and if you haven’t had a look yet
then you’ve got no excuse now. I’m talking about our Look North website. If you
miss the programme and you want to catch up on the day’s local news, you can
now watch Look North on the internet. Go to www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull and you
can watch the programme in full, or see some of the individual pieces as well.

That’s about it from me, have a good day and I’ll be here with Look North
tonight on BBC One at six thirty.

Bye for now

Peter
