Hello and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. If you did something spooky for
Halloween last night I hope you had a good time, and today’s the first day of
November, so just over a month and a half to get those Christmas presents
bought and wrapped!
Coming up on Look North today, Humberside Police has been criticised again for
the way it keeps personal information. In the past serious failings were
identified over the force's record keeping about the child killer Ian Huntley.
We'll have the full story on the programme.

Can more be done to protect drivers in Lincolnshire where roads run alongside
rivers or drains? A man in his twenties died yesterday after a van plunged into
the River Witham, we covered it on the programme, and it follows other tragic
recent events in the same stretch of the river.

We'll hear from the man who's been fighting for more than fifty years for
compensation after Britain's nuclear testing programme on Christmas Island.

There’s more on the sixty foot whale that became stranded in the Humber this
morning. We're on board with the Humber Rescue as marine mammal experts try to
find out what happened to the whale and why it died.

We’ll also be finding out what the research vessel the RRS James Cook is doing
in Hull, it's a state of the art ship which carries scientists around the world.

And of course we’ll have the detailed weather forecast for our region as well.
That’s all coming up at the usual time of half past six tonight on BBC One. I
hope you can join me.

Shows

Well as the cold weather draws in and the evenings get darker, now’s a good
time to cosy up in the theatre, and there are a couple of very good shows I’ve
picked out that are heading our way in Hull this month. Dad’s Army is heading
to the New Theatre starting on November 12th, and it stars Barton-Upon-Humber
actor Peter Martin in the lead role as Captain Mainwaring. The role was of
course made famous by Arthur Lowe in the much loved television series. You
might have seen Peter in Emmerdale and also in The Royle Family, and that
sounds like a good night out, if it’s half as good as the television series
it’ll be fantastic.
Another show called Magic of the Musicals is opening on November 15th at Hull
City Hall. If you’re a big fan if musicals, as I am, this should be a great
show. It’s a selection of songs from some of the most successful West End
musicals of all time, it starts Wayne Sleep and Melanie Stace, formerly of the
Generation Game.
So if you’re looking for a show to see over the next month, there are a couple
of the big ones. If you get tickets, have a great time and let me know how it
was. If you want to contact me to let me know about anything, a story for the
programme or the letter perhaps, you can contact me on [EMAIL PROTECTED] as
always.

Sex Ban

I wrote section in the letter recently about the new giant Airbus A380, or
Superjumbo, which is an amazing feat of engineering, but it seems some people
might not be able to enjoy it as much as they hoped. A number of the aircraft
produced feature suites with double beds, but Singapore Airlines has imposed a
ban on couples engaging in “inappropriate activity” as they put it.
It’s quite a bizarre thing to impose I suppose if you’ve paid out what must be
a lot of money for one of those private suites, and how are they going to
check! It wasn’t something that affected the first couple to book a double bed
on it’s first flight from Singapore to Sydney. Apparently 76 year old Tony and
his 51 year old wife Julie had barely enough time for a kiss because they were
besieged by media and photographers, interested in snapping pictures of them on
their “romantic” journey.
I’m not sure what effect some “inappropriate activity” might have on the
operating of a state of the art plane, but if you’re travelling with Singapore
Airlines you might want to take the time to get some sleep and keep your hands
to yourself rather than break airline rules!

Genius of Photography

I don’t know if you’ve seen this advertised on the television lately, but
tonight’s the second episode of a fascinating programme about the history of
photography. It’s on BBC Four, a digital channel, and it’s called The Genius of
Photography. It’s a really wonderful programme if you’re interested in pictures
and want to see some fantastic images, and if you’re a bit of an enthusiast
with a camera you might pick up some useful tips. I look forward to seeing some
excellent pictures sent in to us at Look North in the next few weeks!

Don’t forget to watch the programme tonight at half past six on BBC One, but if
you get home late or can’t see the programme live then you can catch Look North
on our website at www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull. You can also watch some of our
top stories individually as well, so there’s no excuse for ever missing a
programme now!

That’s it from me, enjoy the rest of your day and I hope you can join me later.

Bye for now

Peter
