I understand what you are saying, Marcus (and everyone else). Is all work
equal or ??? and how do we prevent cheats? Let's examine how this is done in
the professional engineering circles (at least in Canada).

You become license once you:

- demonstrate technical background (either a degree from a university than
can grant degrees or by taking technical exams)
- 4 years of supervised experience under a licensed engineer
- pass a law and ethics exam
- 3 references (that are also licensed engineers)

Once you accomplish these tasks, the PE organization doesn't require
_anything_ from the licensed engineer except an annual payment.

It is left to the engineer, on his honour (or, at least, professional well
being), to maintain his skills. And these are the guys building bridges,
buildings, mines, and other things for the public.

Why does it work? I think because of the 'P' word in Professional Engineer.
Sure, there are ways to get your licensed revoked due to negligence and/or
incompetence (maybe a similar thing would be needed by LPI) but the onus is
on the person to be professional. And, of course, there are abuses but...

That's what I'm proposing. A 'professional' recertification policy. In a
way, it is easier this way for the LPI professional than the time and worry
of studying for more exams. It would take an hour or two to assemble the
information and, voila, you are recerted for another X years.

I know that I'm busy enough and would prefer a non-exam based way to maintain
my credentials...

Especially at the LPIC-3 level. By that time, someone has shown the
commitment to their professional designation by taking at least 5 exams.

Regards,
