@Schooner and others OK I have now replaced the desktop image, with an enhanced version with less initial setup and updated the read me file accordingly.
This new image uses the fw_setenv / fw_printenv functionality so the u boot variables can be set from linux (also in chroot, with some fuss...) Best wishes Michael B.
