David, I too wish the PDFLP under Hawatmeh rather than Hamas had emerged to lead the struggle. I'm aware the Israelis early on encouraged Hamas as a conservative alternative to the secular Palestinian left before it too turned to armed struggle. I also noted that it expressed this in terror attacks on Israeli civilians before it evolved in Gaza and replaced the collaborationist PA at the head of the Palestinian resistance. It's unfortunate that the missiles of all combatants are aimed at cities; Hamas is not uniquely guilty of this, and has claimed infinitely fewer lives and desruction than the barbaric Israel air and ground missile assaults in Gaza. As for involving the masses of the oppressed, how many attempts at mass mobilization have been quickly and brutally suppressed by the Israelis? I'm still waiting for hard evidence that Hamas political and military leaders deliberately tarrgeted civilians along the border in lieu of IDF forces. Finally, I think it's entirely possible that the Gazan population will turn on Hamas if Israel's campaign is successful. It's not uncommon for defeated peoples to turn on their leaders and question why they brought on a disasterous losing war.
