X-members are, as has been said, different from year to year.
When I chased this up 18 months ago I went to a wrecker with a dozen or
more 1600s, measured every one of those friggin' x-members and found about
2 that were the same. I used an accurate technique to measure the
difference in height between the flange on the x-member where it bolts to
the body and the centre of the control arm pickup point, and found that
inconsistency was the rule. If you measure from the lower edge of the
x-member up to the pickup point you won't do any good in my opinion, too
much part-swapping ( and maybe big tolerances from factory ) to go by the
year.
I grabbed the best of them, gained about 19-20mm compared to my original -
made a noticeable difference but not immense. I think the 'bumpsteer
spacers' between the outboard end of the control arm and the bottom of the
strut would be necessary to correct the problem properly, or even better
have the steering arms re-bent to correct the misalignment that causes
bumpsteer.
