In fact on the L series race engines we found that you had to open up the
side clearances about 4 thou on the rods. This prevented bottom end
failures as the stock side clearances were too tight and used to keep the
oil in the big end for too long. This allowed it to collect excess heat and
break down. After increasing clearances and oil flow, no more problems.
