Actually startup is where the engine wears most when the oil film in the
bearings is very thin (no pressure from the oil pump yet). That's why cars that
travelled their kilometers in the country on longer drives rather than shorter
start and stop trips in the city tend to be in better condition for the same
number of kilometers. Also why taxis seem to be able to run for a huge number of
kilometers compared to privately owned cars.

Having said that I agree that it seems a gimmick to me as well, oil adheres
reasonably well to metal. I just don't think that a slight extra amount of
adhesion to metal surfaces will result in a thicker film of oil existing before
startup, as after all it is only the layer of oil molecules closest to the metal
that will be affected by the supposed attraction.
