I'm running a Z20 block with a Z24 head and Z18ET manifolds.

Firstly my block has an axtra thread in the side  - I just plugged it up but they aren't in the L series.

I thought all Z series heads were the same, but my Z24 head mated with the Z18ET manifolds perfectly.

The Z series rods are longer and the pistons shorter, with short skirt and 1mm rings
The Z20 rods are a little scrawny compared to the L20B, but the pistons are by far better.

You could run the L rods with Z pistons to get some seriously low compression.
