Rick I agree.
For road use the standard exhaust manifold on an L16 isn't too bad, and its
a lot quieter thasn extractors.  Its not going to restrict breathing as much
as what follows it.  The puny stock exhaust system should be simply up
graded to a 2 inch one.
The other big restriction is the intake breathing.  Buy a pair of twin SU's
including the aircleaner, linkages and manifold from a 180BSSS for about
$100-$150 and you will get another real improvement.
That's about $400 all up, but both mods will be able to bolt on to your new
L18 engine (with a good breathing head and cam) when it comes.

If all this seems too expensive how about going back to basics.  Is your
current engine in tune? Good plugs, and particularly points with the right
settings?  Distributor advancing correctly? Clean airfilter?  Valve tappets
set correctly? Cam chain not stretched to the point where cam timing is
badly retarded?
These all reduce the performance and carbs and exhausts wont help if these
basics are crook.
