(Your response to Arlo is relevant too .. the historical aspect and
the "know it when I see it" angle ...)

Clearly I can recognise specific examples, particularly extreme
examples - ie I do "know" the difference. The problem was to find any
clear distinguishing feature(s). (ie I can see clear dictinctions
between the levels 1 & 2 and levels 2 & 3, but the 3 & 4 distinction
is much fuzzier - definitionally, not in actual practice

I can't quite believe the role reversal here ... you telling me a
pragmatist who generally disowns "definitions", that definitions /
categories will necessarily be fuzzy ... I agree. I was using the
endless quest to find / agree clear distinguishing features as part of
that argument, not that I expected to find one clear distinction -
merely many possible factors that you might take into account ... but
still fuzzy.

Actually your historical reminder in response to Arlo has given me
some food for thought .... about how better to interpret the levels
.... so I'll stop typing and start thinking ;-)
