DM: Qualitative difference gives us all all difference, but what does irreducible mean?
[Krimel] Yeah, what does that mean? I mean in truth all knowledge is subjective. You know phenomenology much better than I do but what little I know about it suggests that it is really on to something. Objective knowledge is always a matter of qualia, what it is like. But qualia refers to a translation of direct perception. My direct experiences of color, sound and solidity need no translation. I know them directly. To share knowledge of them I need to symbolize them or to interact with beings who can recognize my emotional expressions. So while all of my experience is purely subjective that part which requires translation is objective. We are also able to "objectivize" ourselves. That is to regard our personal bodies in the same way that we regard to bodies and persons of others. All of this leads to much confusion and gnashing of teeth when we try to get metaphysical about it. But in short what I am saying is that my physical experience of private events (those going on within my skin) are of a radically different sort than my experience of things outside of my skin. My knowledge of my left hand is radically different that my knowledge of the glove I wear on it.
