i think that the subject-object split underlies the
intellectual level.

i think julian jaynes and bo would agree.

It has been years and years since I read Jaynes but as I recall he was
addressing the differentiation of function in the two hemispheres of the
brain. One side deals more with language production and the other with
understanding language. Jaynes claimed that prior to a particular date
people heard voices in their heads that they did not identify with. They
just did what the voices said or felt guilty about not doing it. He based
this largely on a speculative reading of ancient writings. It was an
interesting if somewhat dubious set of ideas, that he proposed.

I would suggest that evolution works way too slowly to have the kind of
effect Jaynes was claiming. On the other hand while there are constraints on
how much our brain structure can change physically over time, there are
plenty of gains we can make through efficiency. Things like writing,
printing and digital coding, in short technological innovations and skills
that have led to a remarkable transformation of consciousness over the past
several centuries. I recently pointed out that IQs have risen dramatically
over the past half a century largely due to increased ability to work with
concepts.

I will not dwell on the rest of your post other that to point out that in
the Jewish tale of the Fall, man and God were never "one".

Oh yeah, that and all this business about "enlightened" adults returning to
their allegedly original state of "unity" sounds a bit like second childhood
minus the bedwetting. But then again there was the breast feeding...

Hmm, there is a dualism I am comfortable embracing.
