i think we can sort this point out. yes truth and
objectivity are the peak values in the 4th level but
the MOQ, for one, evolves this 4th level such that we
are aware of the *provisional nature* of truth and
objectivity.
science pares away falsehood; it does not proclaim
truth - or when it does, it does so with an awareness
of context dependence and provisionality....otherwise
it is bad science and a low quality statement.
this is where the MOQ and postmod relativity agree.
they are a step onwards from the strictures of
explicit absolutes (truth, morals, laws etc) -
*positive nihilism*. MOQ then goes one step further
and replaces explicit truth with implicit
value/quality.
our intellectual framework needed fixing. that is the
whole point of Pirsig's quest. it is an intellectual
quest. to accept the 4th level as SOL (rather than the
fact that SOL underpins it) is inadequate i feel. the
MOQ is part of the 4th level and it is aware of the
inadequacy of SOL, in relation to its concordance with
experienced reality. this is crucial; it is
significant beyond measure; it is the bridge between
science, art and religion and between east and west.
so yes intellect is a static level, and the MOQ is the
key within it that points beyond it... that
acknowledges the inherent limitation of S/O thinking.
from here we go on to the code of art itself - the
code that trumps the literal S/O 'truth' of the
intellectual level. the MOQ enables the intellect to
accomodate the rightness of this, which is a point i
hadn't fully considered before: *this makes the
intellectual level unique*. the intellect, unlike the
other levels, is capable of *understanding it's own
limitations*.
