The captain projected his cultural preconceptions on Lila, when he was
Questioning her she got upset with him and told him she was what he
perceived her to be, not who she really is, she says that is what most
men she has met do to her. 
Dusenberry went to a native feast and told them they were doing it all
wrong. It did not match his preconceived cultural idea of how natives
Prepared a traditional feast.
