Hi David M

[Joe]
To discuss ³consciousness² in psychological terms it stands in contrast
to³mechanical². Nicoll gives the example of a young child given a pear with
an ugly worm in it. He becomes afraid. If this is repeated there is a good
chance the child will never like pears. This dislike is mechanical for the
child. How useful is using ³conscious² and ³mechanical² when discussing the
glasses culture hands us!

[Joe]
The eyeglasses that culture hands us are ³mechanical². Is ³mechanical² a
useful term for discussing cultural behavior? The nation is composed of
individuals. Are there mechanical nations, mechanical wars, mechanical
societies, mechanical individuals? How widespread?

DM: Seems tome there is a constant movement between conscious and
unconscious/mechanical behaviour/patterns/customs/traditions.

Hi David M and all,

[Joe]
I do not know why I am so reluctant, and nervous to respond to your
statement. The anonyms to ³conscious² are lacking. It is an individual
experience. There are many anonyms to ³mechanical² in your ³Seems to me².
Perhaps this is a tribute to a scientific outlook denying the validity of a
conscious outlook. Why are they opposed? Pirsig seems to suggest undefined
DQ can only have meaning to a conscious person. IMO constant movement
between conscious and mechanical is suspect. Much of what I accept as
conscious behavior is mechanical behavior. I cannot remember what I do from
day to day. Memory is conscious. From the social level onward there is a
dual evolution until the meta_MOQ level which is only a conscious level.
