Matt: Well, I wasn't cataloging, I was identifying problematic senses of the concept, or at least ones I found problematic, which seem to me to be senses that Pirsig needs to bank on in order to get as much mileage out of it as he seems to want. Krimel said: I think the chief difference between us is that I don't see a lot of this as abstraction. I think most of these notions can and have been operationally defined and studied. The problem has more to do with interpreting existing data than speculating about meaning. Matt: Yeah. I'm not really sure what our difference is. You gave a lot of answers to how ideas, concepts, words, emotions, sensations, neurons, etc., all shake out, how you keep your philosophical web of positions consistent, if you will, but like I said before, there are a lot of ways to be consistent and the way I, at least, tell where a person is on the philosophical dial (i.e. where we are in comparison, whether I could go along with a particular proposal, etc.) is with reference to philosophical problems. At almost every point in our conversation, you've given very different descriptions of the basic tools of our conversation. Which is fine, but this makes it very hard for me at least to hook up and engage in a meaningful way. If we have no reference point that remains the same for both of us, we end up just spinning around each other. That's why I brought up SOM and Pirsig, and I certainly don't always do the best at enunciating my problems, but I'm currently out of ideas.
