Hi Andre and Steve --
[Steve]:
The MOQ is an intellectual description of reality of which the
MOQ is a part. If the MOQ is not an intellectual pattern, then
what do you suppose it is? Pirsig claims that everything fits into
a four volume encyclopedia plus DQ.
[Andre]:
Hi Steve, as I suggested to Ron in another post I am sitting in a
slump, a mental block at the moment and find it difficult to get
out of. I understand that the MoQ is an intellectual formulation,
a paradigm, an abstract formulation. What I have difficulty with
is the DQ 'part' which I equate with the 'aesthetic continuum'
which cannot be represented intellectually, not even in an abstract
way. Maybe this is where my problem is.
Any guidance will be appreciated.
Andre, my mind is very active right now, so perhaps I can guide you through
that slump.
If you've looked at the "diagram" (Fig. 4) that Pirsig included toward the
end of his SODV paper, you'll see that he's outlined a box in which his four
levels appear as blocks. Starting from the top, these are:
INTELLECT, SOCIAL PATTERNS, BIOLOGICAL PATTERNS, and INORGANIC PATTERNS.
The first two are bracketed as "Subjective Static Patterns", the last two as
"Objective Static Patterns".
DYNAMIC QUALITY is typed at the top, outside the box. His explanation for
this placement of DQ is: "In this diagram you will notice that Dynamic
Quality is not shown in any block. It is in the background. This seems the
best way to represent it. It is not only outside the blocks, it pervades
them but it goes on where the blocks leave off." [If you haven't yet read
this paper, go to http://www.quantonics.com/Pirsigs_SODV.html ]
What this means to me is that DQ encompasses all four "static" levels in a
"transcendent" way without itself being static. What it also suggests is
that Dynamic Quality is his "ultimate reality", or what I call Essence. As
you know, in my ontology there are no levels and only one division -- the
Sensibility/Beingness dichotomy from which subjective value-awareness and
objective existence are differentiated by the cognizant individual.
(Incidentally, Bodvar has argued that LILA changes Pirsig's original SODV
paradigm in some way that affects the Intellect Level, but as I'm unable to
comprehend an intellect independent of human thought, you can hash this out
with him.)
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ham
