My point is still that chance has nothing to do with this, but much
more with the long string of subsequent 'probability fields' (to use
your words), within the context of an (MoQ) evolving universe.
[Arlo]
What "chance" has to do with it that probability at any step along
the way is never 100%. Any number of small events could have derailed
the appearance of "man" in the cosmos. An asteroid here. A virus
there. Our being here was never a given. "Chance" is another way of
saying, "at any given point, there is such and such a probability
(chance) something may happen". This is why I think "AHA!" captures
the MOQ to a "T", as the unintended consequences of probability
fields overlap and unexpected things become possible, when these do
occur, it is only AFTER that the crystallize as patterns, only AFTER
does their replication grow or shrink in probability.
And sometimes, what from our vantage is "better" loses in this flux
of conflict, as in the plane crashes we've been using as examples. I
am reminded of an old Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin remarks
(loose quote), "Everything in the universe that has existed or
happened up to this point has happened with the sole purpose of
creating ME". It certainly seems this way when we consider the odds
of Arlo or Andre existing exactly as we do a billion yeas ago. With
our eyes fixed backwards, our existence has the illusion of being
pre-ordained, pre-determined, being part of some "master plan". But
when we gaze forward we can see that the future is chance, it is
probability that decreases to nil as one's gaze goes further and further on.
This remindes me of the epilogue to ZMM where Pirsig talks about the
Greeks (I think) and how they saw time as rushing up from behind you
and receding away in front in you (rather than something that came
towards you from the front and receded behind you). Time looking back
is actualized probability (Krimel explains this better than I can),
time looking forward is unactualized probability (chance).
But this is also exactly (I think) what you said.
[Andre]
This is the LINK and, for me has nothing
pre-ordered/ordained/planned/intention... whatever. This link is seen
'in hind-sight'..and after this you get questions about the REASON of
it all. Why are we here etc, etc.
[Arlo]
Yes.
[Andre]
If I have misunderstood something somewhere along the line Arlo, let me know.
[Arlo]
No, I think we are on the same page. We probably just use the word
"chance" differently, but I think we mean the same thing.
By the way, this makes me a bit curious. Is English your "native"
language (the socio-linguist in me HATES this designation, but I'll
use it for convenience)? You live in Amsterdam, is Dutch your primary
language? What is the Dutch word (and cultural associations) for
"chance"? I know the concept of "luck" is one that does not map
precisely into German, was wondering if "chance" was the same?
