Arlo to Andre:
No, I think we are on the same page. We probably just use the word
"chance" differently, but I think we mean the same thing.

Andre:
Agree, and do think we do not differ that much. There are many ways leading
to Rome.

Arlo
By the way, this makes me a bit curious. Is English your "native"
language (the socio-linguist in me HATES this designation, but I'll
use it for convenience)?

Andre;
Mei you wenti (Chinese for 'no problem'). If, by 'is English your native
language', you mean: were you born 'in' it? I'd have to say No.

Born and raised in Holland, this gave me the Dutch language plus a dialect
thereof. I learned Dutch 'proper' at school. But from a fairly early age
never felt 'at home' with this language ...enjoyed English much more (being
brought up with the Beatles and the '60's generally must have had a lot to
do with this).
Academically, my Dutch never reached much beyond highschool but I went to
Australia, on my own, when I was 19 and there, after various odd jobs, went
to Uni (I have 2 degrees). So, academically, my English is of a much higher
level than my Dutch.

Problem I have is that, since the Dutch always put people into 'boxes', my
English, which is in many ways better than the average native speaker, is
not recognised (by e.g. language schools) because I have not been born in an
English speaking country. In other words, you cannot be a native speaker
because ..... .
Doesn't help with the job search.

Arlo;
What is the Dutch word (and cultural associations) for
"chance"? I know the concept of "luck" is one that does not map
precisely into German, was wondering if "chance" was the same?

Andre:
The Dutch word for chance (kans) is very similar to the way we have been
talking about it here Arlo. It also carries connotations of 'probability' ,
'possibility' etc.

The lottery, for example is a 'kansspel', a game of chance.

The concept of 'luck' is very different. Its meaning is more like
'fortunate' in the sense of: when you win the lottery you have 'geluk' (you
have luck). Or when you have survived an accident you have had much
'geluk'.(you've been lucky).

Andre
