Hi Craig,

The answers to questions (i) and (ii) are generally yes.
Of course in (i) point (2) you don't "have to" interpret that way -
but the term "identify" has a lot bound up in it ... almost by
definition, you are relating it to prior experience - that dependence
you mention ... it would take effort not to. As soon as you do relate,
that referrents have some symbolic element, like elements of language.
