We talk about our "freedom" a lot, the freedoms we have, that we want
less "restrictions" and more "choice".
The recent strip at XKCD brought home a point that I thought I'd share.
http://xkcd.com/706/
When you think about, from any given point we really do have a
thousand and one options, but do we walk instead along a very safe,
very predictable, very routine path? Think about all the things you
are free to do at this very moment, and the next, and the next, and
then think about the choices you make in selecting from these
options, maybe you are not so free as you think? Not trapped in a
choice-less prison by an evil guvmint, and not enslaved by the great
collectivist bugbear, but wearing shackles of our chosing....
For those not familiar with XKCD, if you mouse over any of his
strips, you'll find a comment that adds a final "punch" to the joke.
This one was kinda cool... I mean, aren't we somewhat glad that
everyone around us acts fairly predictably and repeats their choices
from a very narrow set?
