SOM says that there is an objective world "out there" that we "in here" only can theorize about. Further, the in-here theories are supposed to be "intellectual" thus intellect and thinking has become synonymous. Now along comes the MOQ and says that the said "in here/ out there" dichotomy is NOT reality's ground, but the mere static intellectual level of the real ground - the DQ/SQ.configuration This INVERSION cannot be called "intellectual" because the very term has changed fundamentally. > It's easy to _intellectually_ call things patterns of value without > having any appreciation for how that might differ from calling those > same things subjects and objects. If you drop "intellectual" we agree. The switch from SOM to MOQ is what Pirsig tries to convey by the inside-out turn of a smelly sock metaphor. The bugs inside are on the same turf, yet in a different universe and in the Q-universe thinking isn't an intellectual activity, rather a biological capacity that can be employed by all levels.
