Naaa, the idea is to eliminate suffering.  I've heard the Dalai Lama speak 
of this.  Desiring to become enlightened or compassionate are clearly
positive 
desires.

In the end as I understand Buddhism the desire for enlightenment and
compassion are among the final stumbling blocks on the path to eliminating
desire. They too produce suffering resulting from their lack.
