"... in 1998, an article entitled "Quantum Theory without Observers,"
spanning two issues of _Physics Today_, argued that several interpretations,
principally the Bohm interpretation, eliminate a role for the observer in
quantum mechanics. (Bohm himself, as quoted above, would not agree.) when
such arguments are put forth, it is usually unclear whether the elimination of
the observer is supposedly in principle or just for all practical purposes (a
FAPPTRAP, to use Bell's put-down of the for-all-practical-purposes argument
when it is presumed to resolve fundamental problems). But the attitude of this
_Physics Today_ article matches the sympathies of the present majority of the
physics community.

"Eight decades after the Schrodinger equation the meaning of physics'
encounter with consciousness is still in contention. When experts can't agree,
you can choose your expert---or speculate on your own.

"What's going on?" is still an open question. "You know something's
happening here, but you don't know what it is." Physics has encountered
something beyond the realm of "ordinary" physics. And, "Every interpretation
of quantum mechanics involves consciousness."

"Starting with quantum mechanics, we have encountered consciousness. Our
next chapter starts with consciousness and approaches the encounter from the
other direction."

Interesting. I checked the archives to see if anyone had previously mentioned
this book. Sure enough! John had mentioned the book a while back. John
rules!!! Marsha is slower than molasses, but finally got there.
