Probably someone using the NS 4.x menus as a model when we did the testing
skin.

It's firstname.lastname@<college>.ox.ac.uk. And there's an email search
facility for those tiny minority who are known by different names to their
official ones (e.g. called by their middle name.) or if you don't know
their college or unit.
 
There is something there, and it's not LDAP. It couldn't be LDAP, because
this would remove freedom of choice in mail client.
