Cache misses are _extremely_ expensive. The P166 MMX and up have a better cache than the P133 and down. But my lowly K5-100 beats the P166 hands down. Hey, it doesnt matter if your fmul takes 4 instead of 3 cycles, if the competitor first has to wait 60+ cycles until its data finally arrives... This is why I encode both channels separately in PEM. (i.e., a granule mid channel, a granule side channel, a granule mid, etc.) Oh, by the way, anyone interested in better DCT's?
