I couldn't help noticing that the first stop Sharon is making today on her
reelection tour is the Nokomis neighborhood.

The should really be no surprise. Like the swallows returning to
Capistrano,
every four years Sharon comes back to tell everyone she knows its loud and
THIS TIME she's going to do something about airport pollution.

Remember 1993: After four years doing nothing about airport noise as City
Council President, she told us to elect her Mayor over John Derus because
she was going to fight for a new airport? (Remember her big ad saying this
in the Star Tribune?)

Remember 1997: She was back with more promises. But once she got reelected,
as noise surged under the flight paths, and spread into areas like the
Eighth Ward she used to represent, she was no where to be seen.

Remember three years ago when she said moving an airport to Dakota County
would hurt downtown because it was too far away? But a couple weeks ago,
with an election around the corner, suddenly she was talking about moving
air traffic all the way to Rochester!

Remember passing over qualified citizen activists so she could appoint the
chief lobbyist for Northwest Airlines to the planning commission?

So now she's back. Welcome to the neighborhood but please don't tell us
about what you did to "stop dewatering under Lake Nokomis."

You sat quietly when the news broke. You did nothing when hundreds of us
had to take on the MAC, and were being labled extremists. When hundreds of
us faced down the MAC at a Wathershed District meeting you were nowhere in
sight. Only when we got 700 people in an auditorium did you suddenly
appear....ready to tell us once again how much you care.

During Sharon's eight years as mayor, and four as council president---as the
pollution problem has grown and grown---those who suffer from these problems
every day have come to understand that they can talk to their leader about
the problem every four years. But a problem that has been allowed to get
this bad needs a leader who won't just work on it when it's time for the
next election.
