First, CNIA is only as dysfunctional as the neighborhood allows it to be.
There are all kinds of people in the Central Neighborhood and many of those
people types get involved in neighborhood politics. Some Republicans that
go to DFL functions, some neighbors that criticize the neighborhood
organization but don't realize that their behavior is part of the
neighborhood fabric, which sometimes is a bit tattered and worn and in need
of repair.
------------------------
I'm not sure what your point is here. Please be more specific. I assume
you are referring to me in the "Republicans that go to DFL functions"....
as far as I understand it, I don't know why I can't go and observe and pick
up information at a DFL ward convention. What behavior are you talking
about? I assume you are talking about my behavior in the neighborhood.
I'd like to know specifically what you are talking about.
The reason Brian Herron has always had my loyalty is because not only is he
human, but he admits it publicly. He is consistently working with his ward
as much as humanly possible, and is willing to listen to all sides before
developing an opinion based on consensus of the neighborhood and sometimes
the bigger picture which involves the whole city. Many folks that have the
behavior of consistently listening tend to get accused of doing or implying
things that they have not said -- particularly by those that the of
listening is foreign. Those folks that are not used to listening seem to
form opinions based on their assumptions and present those opinions as fact.
-------------------------------------------
Brian did come and "listen" to the meeting between the Church and the
neighborhood about the alley turn. However it was clear he had made up his
mind prior to coming to our meeting. As far as Brian Herron being human, I
would agree, he certainly is a human being, as are you and I.
------------------------------
Brian Herron, as with any human being I know, including you Eva, has made
mistakes.
--------------------------
I don't have problems with folks making mistakes. And you're quite
correct, I make mistakes too.
--------------------------------
But one mistake Brian does not make is telling lies. Brian's integrity is
above reproach, which is something I would really like to see more folks
not only in City Council but in Neighborhood politics work to reach.
---------------------------------------
Matthea, maybe you can address the specifics. I did call Brian a couple
years ago when the stadium issue was hot, and asked him what his position
was on public subsidy of pro-sports stadiums. He certainly led me to
believe he would oppose such subsidy. I later read in the Star Tribune
that he was one of the votes supporting a city subsidy for a stadium. I
would have had more respect for Brian if he'd just explained his position
honestly.
--------------------------------
Those folks that give their time in the neighborhood organizations are
volunteering long hours. It is amazing to me that those that volunteer the
most time get the most criticism from those that "don't have time" do so
the same. Although I may not agree with everything CNIA is doing, I truly
respect those folks that are giving up much of their personal time to see
the neighborhood move forward.
----------------------------------------
I appreciate people who put the time into CNIA.... However, I have some
concerns about this reallocation request. What I don't like is all the
racial demogogery.... This is a diverse neighborhood, and we ALL need to
work together.
--------------------------
I believe if folks want to see their neighborhoods change in a positive
way, rather than criticize everything that the neighborhood volunteers do,
one might want to get involved and work in a positive manner to see things
change for the greater good of the neighborhood.
--------------------------------------------
Matthea, I plan on going to that Family Festival to try to find out what is
going on.
One issue I'm interested in is the issue David Brauer raised yesterday....
What are the Minneapolis Police doing to prevent a Barbara Schneider type
trajedy from happening again. I remember years ago, when working at a
group home, having to call the police about a resident who was trying to
kill herself with a butcher knife. I remember being impressed with the
police team that came, and how they descalated the young woman, and took
the knife from her. There are some good things Hennepin County is doing
with mental health. One of the best is the crisis homes--which provide a
temporary foster home for adult mentally ill people when they are in
crisis--but don't really need hospitalization. However, there are also
really bad things--and the way the police handled the Schneider incident,
and the incident where the young African American was killed are both
examples of this.
