It seems like what happens is there seem to be "coups" and coutercoups each
year. There is lots of rumor mongering.

I wasn't at the May meeting last year. However I was at the September
meeting and the annual meeting two years ago--and there was another coup
there. And as I recall, after the current board got going, they almost
immediately fired the executive director of CNIA.

All I can say, Wizard, you were not there. I was. I also went to the
planning meeting on the same subject. There has been a long term constant
struggle between our block and Park Avenue Methodist Church. The Park
member who I spoke to told me it was her understanding that there was only
isolated opposition to the alley turn. I corrected her on that. This
suggests that the Church Building committee leaders (who were at the
meeting with the neighbors) didn't act on good faith with the Church
memebership, telling the membership that the block supported the alley
turn, when a majority on the block opposed it, and more than 20 folks
signed a petition opposing this idea.

This church also bothers me because of their long term bigotry against
gays. Considering the Church is located in a very gay neighborhood, it's
rather bothersome that the Church has the attitudes that it does. Pastor
Heineman used to (I don't know if he still does) serve on the Minnesota
Family Council board. The MFC is the premier anti-gay organization at the
capitol. They also focus on abortion, and school choice, but their primary
issue seems to be attacking gays, and spreading misinformation about gays.
A good friend of mine, who is Lesbian, was a long term member of Park. She
finally left when one of the ministers preached a sermon that blamed gays
for a number of the ills in the world.

Wizard continues:

I certainly did hear that Brian opposed the subsidy. Maybe he changed his
mind later. I also heard Brian's staff member say at the City Planning
commission hearing about the alley turn, that part of the reason Brian
supported the Alley Turn was so that a minority contractor could start work
on the project--and it would be a business hardship for this contractor, if
the project was delayed.

I know this a very prominently DFL ward. However, Jesse Ventura did much
better here than you expect. I have much better experience than many
neighbors I talk with getting my calls returned, or emails answered. The
City Council races are non-partisan races, and in alot of ways deal with
practical issues, not Democrat or Republican issues.

>>
>> What I don't like is all the

>Nobody likes the racial tension in Central, but nothing is going to change

There is much less racial tension at 3400 Park, Oakland, Portland block
club meetings than there are at CNIA meetings. I personally think that the
way people change their attitudes about other races is by working with
people, and socializing with folks who are different. I haven't seen that
"diversity training" or "anti-racism workshops" do all that much good.
Yes, there is a need to be more honest about these issues, but I've also
seen the who is more oppressed game, or charges of racism, sexism,
homophobia, etc. bandied about as weapons to make power plays.

>We have danced
>around this issue for the last twenty years that I can personally attest
to, >but we have NEVER taken the bull by the horns and worked through the
issues.

How are we supposed to work through the issues? That sounds like a group
therapy session, not working together to improve the neighborhood.
