I used to work for the company that printed and sent the VF bills programming PReS. Every week we would run thousands of impressions, collate them, fold them, envelope them, and throw them on the NZP truck. It's not a cheap process, but then again, we had many other clients doing the very same thing that aren't changing their ways (yet).
I got the notifcation from VF last week and thought that my ex-boss must be getting a bit edgy about now. (Mass printing and mailing was the core of the business) I wasn't happy with the change either. Opt-out is acceptable, but I field a guess that not too many people opted out, or even logged in to the site to know that option existed. I'm sure it's very legal. VF wouldn't be so stupid to implement such a massive infrastructure change without doing their legal homework. I beleive the only legal requirement for invoices is that it contains the word "Tax Invoice" on it somewhere, and the details of both yourself, and the customer. At the end of the day, I think this is where we are heading. I doubt VF will be the first.
