First time posting to this list.

Remember you do not have to be a 20th level basket weaver to basket weave
at a very good skill rate. Feats that allow bonuses to skills could be
taken, etc. Also most good craftsman will have their skill maxed, so
getting a +10 bonus at 1st level for an 'Expert' is fairly easily
achieved. I'm rounding here as I don't have my books in front of me.

I can also assume that the 'Expert' class is using something like a d4 hit
points and gets combat abilities fairly slowly. So a 5th level fighter
would still whip up on a 10th level expert (which is indeed a very rare
exception to what most people will achieve).

As for what the craftsman gets experience for, I would assume an NPC would
gain experience (albeit it VERY slowly) over time for Roleplaying and
achievement style awards, not hack and slashing adventurer type stuff.
Though running adventures with a craftsmen bent would be boring to me or
my players, I have seen campaings that move slowly enough that developing
such a character would be viable even for PCs.

Well, I've rambled enough. But suffice it to say, I do not think the D20
system is flawless for RL sorts of roles, it is after all designed to be
for and about adventures. Not crafts. PCs have above average stats, combat
feats, etc. Your average craftsman even at level 20 would still not have
combat stats or combat feats. They are more worried about basket weaving.
=)
