I am reading much lately about renovation vs. new construction. One comment
in particular got my attention, that there hasn't been an outpouring of
support to save the court house. Could this be that people remember the
debate from the 70's? We saved the courthouse, only to realize that we have
a beautiful building to look at. But we have spent millions on additional
renovations and repairs on a building which is inefficiently laid out and
was not able to be added on to when space was needed. This brought about the
construction of an annex building and the purchase of retail property
downtown scattering offices all over the place. I say let's not make the
same mistake again. It is the job of County Govt. to deliver services in in
an efficient manner, not to operate in a building which is inefficient and
has been nothing but amoney pit, just because it is a beautiful old
building. Let's build new and consolidate the offices in one building, sell
the other buildings and apply those monies to the cost of construction.
Maybe someone who renovates old buildings would be interested in the
courthouse. I'm sure that they could get a good deal on it right now.
