I agree that most pre-IIIe apps should work fine on the IIIe. The IIIe was released 
late in the development cycle of BeamBooks and it threw a pretty big wrench in the 
works. We were assuming all devices with IR would have a serial number. We had to 
switch from a guaranteed unique number to a probably unique random number. As it 
turned out, this change introduced a bug that was only discovered after release. It's 
fixed now, but it would have been nice to have a little warning. We don't need to know 
all about the device, just enough so we can avoid problems in advance. David Fedor and 
the rest of the dev supp crew usually give us plenty of hints about what's to come 
("don't assume x"), but I didn't notice anything about serial numbers.
