I too appreciate the sentiment of the initial post, but no, I don't support
making CodeWarrior an open source project. Cheaper might be nice, but not open
source.

I have long held the belief that companies should give away - or nearly so -
their development environments in order to make more and more software available
to their users. This is good, even if that software is crap that some kid wrote
in his basement. Why? Cause that kid who got excited enough to write his first
"asteroid" game, may go on to develop the next killer app and change the world.

Development systems should be considered part of the R&D expense of a company
like 3Com - a loss leader at best, and not ever considered a revenue generator.

This was always one of the biggest problems developing code for Apple platform
systems. I spent $10k on a Lisa, then $4k on the development software to program
the thing. I still had to use this combination when the first Macs shipped to
write software for the Mac - and Apple thought this was all OK.
