Wilton, there is also a list for running OS X on older PCI-based Macs
like the 8500. I would suggest you read it a while and then decide. I
use OS X some on a 9500 with a G3 upgrade and quite a bit of memory. I
installed it using XPostFacto, mentioned elsewhere. It seems to work as
well or better than OS 9.1, for many things, and gives me an opportunity
to learn the merits of the new system in anticipation of getting a newer Mac.

I also use it more extensively on a PB G-3 "Pismo" (firewire) model, and
-- most recently -- on a Rev. A iMac. It is worth the effort, unless you
plan to stop using Macs altogether in the near future! (IMHO)

The list for older Macs using OS X is "Unsupported OS X" and you can find
the list info here: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/unsupported.html>
