For ALL the other computers?  The iBook and probably the PC would 
activate all three but a IIci or a P631 are unlikely to light up the 
Full Duplex  and 100 lights, the typical interface for those machines 
are 10Base only, as is the 8500.

Unfortunately the 8500 doesn't have a link light on it to verify the 
connection both ways.

The AAUI port is automatically selected if you connect a transceiver, 
otherwise it uses the 10BaseT port.

What happens if you connect the cable and switch AppleTalk to 
Ethernet.  Does the AppleTalk CP have an Ethernet setting?  Does it 
report an error when you switch the connection?  Can you see other 
machines in Chooser (assuming you have a machine on the network with 
File Sharing active)?
