On the three ligts: 100 is for 100BT and the ethernet port on the 
8500 is 10BT, so that light being off is correct.   I have a Linksys 
router, and my Full/Col light stays off also.   The light indicates 
if the connection is Full duplex when on, and blinks to indicate a 
packet collision has occurred.  Have you tried plugging the 8500 
directly into the cable modem to see if that works?   You can use 
either the 10BT port or the AAUI port but not both at once.

Once your Internet connection is up, if you are running OS 9.0.x, I 
would strongly suggest downloading and upgrading to OS 9.1 as it is 
much more stable.   Once you have 9.1 up, download the Open Transport 
patch <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120018> to fix 
some network related issues.
