Which explains things, although I don't know WHY it's > happening or how to fix it. That's the default when the system is set to dhcp and cannot find a server. This is sounding more like a hardware problem. Tackle the easy one first: Take a flashlight and look into the ethernet port of that 8500.Sometimes rough handling of cables will bend or break one of the wires in the port. I had a machine (a PC, but no matter) with these exact symptoms; close inspection of the port revealed that one wire had been pushed up and out of it's track and was jammed up against another one. Some careful manipulation with a fine pair of forceps fixed the problem. A broken wire is more problematic, but fortunately you have the AAUI port. Scrounge an AAUI adapter and try that. If the wires look like they're in the right place check to make sure they're not corroded or gummed up. Macs that don't get connected to ethernet have an open hole...it could have a dustball in there. All else fails, try the AAUI port anyway...if it doesn't work then, it's likely a blown ethernet port on the 8500, fixable by adding a PCI ethernet card. This is a sort of good thing, because you can go up to 100 mbit then, too. > -- Wherever you go, there you are. Bruce Johnson -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
