No need to repeat the Dell story. In brief, Helene purchased a new Dell and it
came with a used hard drive. This probably happens more times than would be
expected and of course, it is absolutely wrong for companies to do. However, the
temptation is there in that computers are bought and returned within the 30 day
guarantee period by many consumers for the fun of it ... and *that's* wrong. And
I'm not defending the big companies for sending used hard drives for "new".

This happened to me with Compaq seven years ago where after setting up the new
computer, and being totally computer illiterate, I did notice the address book
full of phone numbers - doctors, nurses, mistresses (could be), and even as a
newbie (which I'll always be) noticed loads of junk files all over the system. But
not knowing what to do I did a Quick Restore (that's what Compaq called it), and
the system was put back in its original state.

When I did call Compaq for another reason and mentioned this to them, they said I
should *not* have restored the system if I wanted an exchange because I removed
the proof of their misdeed. What is really remarkable is that that same "used"
hard drive is still working with some member of the family now, with no trouble.

That only tells me that it doesn't matter what company you are dealing with, they
are all using the same basic components, the hard drive (new or used) doesn't
matter. Of course, we pay for new and should have new when paid for, but in the
long run, you will get the same use out of the computer. What *does* matter is how
we maintain the system; scandisks, defrags, systematic cleaning the computer of
junk files, etc etc etc. Well, that's only my opinion ... Harold B.
