I have used two DOS based programs under XP Pro without a problem. They 
run in a window in XP however, the Alt Enter will give full screen.  I 
have one other that will only run in a window but then the window goes 
to the background allowing the windows view where the process is 
monitored (Sound editing) . So far, I have only had one program that did 
not run in XP and that was an old game..  I have a couple that I use the 
compatiblity mode for (older programs that I ran under win 95 
transported from Win 3.1).  As an aside, I do have a dual boot on this 
system (win 98 and Win XP Pro) and have kept the memory to 512 because 
of that.  I have no problem running video creating programs, sound 
editing and other graphic intensive editing.  I have an Athlon 1800+ 
with the 512 previously mentioned.  Two hard drives, one of 100 gigs and 
the other 120, with partions on both.

the compatability mode will not work with a number of older programs,
especially if they need real mode capacity, as well as a number of older
utility programs, especially if they are involved with hard drive
activity or similiar operations, which is one of the major ones I am

To one and all,

I have found that I am running into a very frustrating situation with
having to have my system dual boot with Win98SE and WinXP Pro.
Turns out due to the 98 issue, I can not put more than the current 512
Megs of ram in the system, though I followed the way to do things as
given in the Microsoft support database on what to do - seems you just
can NOT run a system having 98 with more than 512 Megs of ram. I bought
and installed another 512 Megs of ram, and got lockups, and all kinds of
other problems like I could not believe, so had to go back to the
original 512 Megs. of ram to get things stable.
So the question I have deals with running XP with just 512 Megs of ram -
how effectively does XP work with this amount of ram???
The issues I am potentially going to have to deal with involve editing
audio and video files in XP, and this is especially one area I dont know
how much potential problem would I be facing with just having the 512
Megs of ram. I have over 300 Gigs of hard drive space to work with from
that standpoint, so hopefully XP would effectively use that space whan
ram was not available. I know it is not like the speed of ram but not
much I can do on that issue it would seem.

I do know that the more ram you have for video editing the better... A few
     

thinga I do know are to make sure your scratch disk isn't
   

too big and to make sure it's on a different disk (physically seperate HD)
     

than the one you are editing on...
