There's a pulldown menu at the top of the screen. I can manually turn the gps on and off from there. If it's off my Google maps and similar programmes won't work.
I leave it off unless needed to run a programme both for power use and reasons of paranoia. ;-) I don't know if I can be "tracked" with it off. I hope not.
